Steve Vai, uno dei più grandi chitarristi nel mondo, arriva oggi ad Ascoli Piceno (Piazza del Popolo) per suonare con musicisti straordinari come Joe Satriani (la nostra intervista a Satriani qui) e The Aristocrats (Guthrie Govan, Marco Minnemann, Bryan Beller) nel G3. G3 è un concerto organizzato da Joe Satriani per la prima volta nel 1995 che lo vede affiancare altri due chitarristi. Le formazioni sono cambiate durante gli anni.

Steve Vai, one of the greatest guitarist on the world, is coming today to Ascoli Piceno (Piazza del Popolo) to play with extraordinary musicians like Joe Satriani (our interview here) and The Aristocrats (Guthrie Govan, Marco Minnemann, Bryan Beller) in the G3. G3 is a concert tour organized by Joe Satriani for the first time in 1995 featuring him alongside two other guitarists. The ensembles changed throughout the years.
Steve Vai is touring through Europe with his new album, Modern Primitive, released as two cd edition including his famous Passion and Warfare (1990) for his 25th Anniversary.
Parla del tuo nuovo album.
Ho due album che usciranno il 24 Giugno. Il nuovo album si chiama Modern Primitive. La ragione per cui è assieme Passion and Warfare è che la maggior parte è stata registrata prima di quest’ultimo. E’ un disco interessante per i fan ai quali è piaciuto quel periodo. E’ una musica davvero intensa, la miglior suonata di chitarra che abbia mai fatto. Adesso sono in tour e sto veramente suonando l’intero cd di Passion and Warfare.
Talk about your new album.
I have two albums coming out on June 24th. The new record is called Modern Primitive. The reason why is packaged with Passion and Warfare is because much of it was recorded back before. The music was written during that period but I completed it now. It’s an interesting record for fans that liked that period. It’s very intense music, the best guitar playing I’ve ever done. Right now I’m on tour and I’m actually performing the entire Passion and Warfare record.
Penso che la musica sia un po’ differente dagli anni Ottanta.
Sì. E’ stata suonata dallo stesso tizio ma quando sei giovane, hai più libertà. E’ veramente coraggiosa, arrogante e senza paura. E’ stato realmente interessante lavorare su quella musica come il vecchio Steve Vai. Sono stato sinceramente ispirato dalla sua arroganza. E’ stato come un fantastico viaggio.
I think the music is a little bit different from the Eighties.
Yes. The same guy made it but when you’re young, you have more freedom. It’s very corageous, bold and fearless. It was very interesting to work on that music as the old Steve Vai. I was truly inspired by its boldness. It was like a great journey.
Come componi una canzone?
Aspetto l’ispirazione. Questa può arrivare in molti modi e non la limito in alcun modo. Può venire quando qualcuno dice qualcosa, quando prendi in mano una penna e inizi a scrivere, quando sei al supermercato a comprare del latte. Ma ad un certo punto, da ovunque arrivi l’ispirazione, devi farla uscire allo scoperto. Deve diventare reale. Quindi di solito la maniera in cui mi immetto in questo processo è costruendo la musica in studio. Mi piace molto suonarla durante i soundcheck in tour. Abbiamo questa regola che quando entro tutti sono pronti a suonare e io non so che cosa ho intenzione di suonare. Loro mi seguono solo e la registrano. E’ come scrivere un libro: ti siedi e non hai idee. Inizi soltanto a scrivere. Qualche volta belle cose possono spuntare dall’improvvisazione, anche se è meglio avere un’improvvisazione “pianificata”.
How do you compose a song?
I wait for inspiration. This can come in many ways and I don’t restrict it to anyone way. It can come when somebody says something, when you pick up a pen and start writing, when you are in the grocery store buying milk. But in some point, whenever the inspiration comes, you have to bring it into the world. It has to become real. So usually the way I do this process it’s building my music in the studio. I really enjoy play it during soundchecks on tour. We have this policy that I come in, everybody is ready to start playing and I don’t know what I’m going to play. They just follow and record it. It’s like you are writing a book, you sit down and you don’t have any ideas. You just start writing. Sometimes beautiful things can come from improvisation, even if it’s better to have a “planned” improvisation.
Qual è la differenza tra un chitarrista membro di una band e un chitarrista solista?
La maggioranza delle band ha un cantante e diversi componenti che suonano strumenti per convenzione. La musica strumentale non è inconsueta. L’80% della mia musica è strumentale e ho delle strofe vocali però ciò dal quale si è attratti nella musica è l’energia, la melodia e l’armonia. Puoi averle senza versi. La melodia della chitarra è la voce della mia musica.
What’s the difference between a band guitarist and a guitarist solo?
Conventionally most bands have a singer and different members playing instruments. Instrumental music is not uncommon. 80% of my music is instrumental and I do have vocal lyrics but the thing you are attracted to in music is the energy, the melody and the harmony. You can have these without lyrics. The guitar’s melody is the voice of my music.
Nella musica sei attratto dall’impossibile. Qual è stata la tua sfida più difficile?
La mia sfida più difficile è il voler fare troppo. Come sai nella vita, puoi solo fare una cosa alla volta. Ci vuole del tempo per finire un progetto. La mia sfida più grande è voler fare tutte le cose che desidero nel minor tempo a disposizione. Sto migliorando in questo. Accetto sempre di più ogni giorno che sono già soddisfatto e veramente felice con ciò che ho raggiunto. Ed il resto è meravigliosa roba extra.
In music you’re attracted by the impossible. What was your most difficult challenge?
My most difficult challenge is to want to do too much. As you know in life, you can only ever do one thing at a time. It takes time to complete a project. My biggest challenge is to do all the things I desire to do in the shortest time that I have. I’m getting better in that. I’m accepting more and more everyday that I’m already satisfied and very happy with what I have accomplished. And all that goes with it it’s wonderful extra stuff.
Quante chitarre hai e quali sono le tue preferite?
Ho quasi duecento sessantaquattro chitarre. Devi tener presente che la gente me le invia. Lavoro a stretto contatto con l’Ibanez, quindi hanno sempre un’estetica differente. Ne suono un sacco ma c’è solo una chitarra che utilizzo la maggior parte delle volte, l’ho chiamata “Evo”.
How many guitars do you have and which are your favorites?
I have about two hundred and sixty-four guitars. You have to keep in mind that people send me them. I work very close with Ibanez, so they always have different aesthetics. I played a lot of them but there’s only one guitar I use most of the times, I called it “Evo”.
Qual è la tua leggenda della chitarra?
A dodici anni la mia più grande ispirazione era Jimmy Page. Poi Brian May, Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore, Carlos Santana, Joe Satriani, che è stato il mio insegnante, e molti altri.
Who’s your guitar legend?
When I was twelve years old Jimmy Page was my biggest ispiration. Then Brian May, Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore, Carlos Santana, Joe Satriani, who was my teacher, and many mores.
Qual è il futuro del rock a tua opinione?
Penso che andrà in diverse direzioni come sempre fa. Nel rock c’è il punk, il blues, il rock’n’roll, l’heavy metal, il death metal, sono tutti stili e culture differenti. Non so cosa accadrà però ciò che so è che la chitarra è uno strumento di espressione. Il mio istinto mi dice che sarà sempre in prima linea nella musica rock per la maniera in cui suona, fa sentire e il modo in cui ti senti quando qualcuno la suona.
What’s rock’s future in your opinion?
I think it would go in different directions as it always do. In rock there’s punk, blues, metal, heavy metal, death metal, they’re all different styles and cultures. I don’t know what will happen, but what I know is that the guitar is an instrument of expression. My instinct tell me the guitar will always be at the forefront of rock music because of just the way it sounds, it feels and the way it makes you feel when you play it.
Da quando dipingi?
Ho cominciato solo due anni fa. Non ho un vero talento naturale. Non mi è stato mai insegnato, dipingo solo cose astratte. Scarabocchiare è un gran divertimento, penso che tutti dovrebbero farlo. Ho dovuto fermarmi sei mesi fa per terminare il cd e concentrarmi sul tour ma non vedo l’ora di tornare a casa e farne ancora.
Since when do you paint?
I only started painting two years ago. I have no real natural talent. I wasn’t never trained, I just paint abstract things. Doodling is so much fun, I think everybody should do it. I had to stop six months ago to finish the record and to concentrate on the tour but I’m really looking forward to going back home and do more.
Perché hai un forum sul tuo sito?
Ai tempi del vecchio Internet non c’erano Facebook, Twitter o Instagram, dunque il forum era l’unico modo per raggiungere i fan. E’ un luogo onnicomprensivo nel quale loro possono parlarsi e condividere idee.
Why do you have a forum on your website?
Back to the old Internet days there was no Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, so the forum was the only way to reach fans. It’s a comprehensive place where they can talk to each other and share ideas.
Sei emozionato di suonare ad Ascoli Piceno? Ci sei mai stato?
Sento sempre un’emozione speciale quando suono in Italia. La mia famiglia è originaria dell’Italia. Questa estate farò delle masterclass (corsi di perfezionamento, ndr) in otto città italiane, quindi trascorrerò molto tempo in questo paese.
Are you excited to play in Ascoli Piceno? Have you ever been there?
I always feel a special excitement when I play in Italy. My family is hailing from Italy.
This summer I’ll do masterclasses in eight italian cities, so I’ll be spending a lot of time in this country.
